The American Council of the Blind (ACB) has approximately 70 state chapters and special-interest affiliates.  Each represents the diverse range of groups within the blind community.  ACB helped to create an organizational culture that values acceptance, peer support, diversity, democracy and direct action.

Our Council represents students, families, teachers, attorneys, governmental employees, entrepreneurs, vending stand operators and the LGBTQ community. Providing direct advocacy and support for hallmark U.S. legislation which has contributed to the independence, dignity and economic opportunities of blind and visually impaired Americans for more than 50 years.

Our Mission:

To increase the independence, security, equality of opportunity, and quality of life for all blind and visually impaired people.

Our Philosophy:

Accepts all people who are blind or visually impaired, regardless of their skills or abilities.

Believes that people with visual disabilities should strive to be the best they can be.  Each blind or visually impaired person has the right and responsibility to define success on his or her own terms.

Recognize the fundamental responsibility of government at every level.  Government must provide a framework of laws, policies, infrastructure, tools and training to permit blind or visually impaired people to participate equally in all aspects of society.  This includes education, employment, civic and spiritual life.

Affirms a strong national ACB organization exists to establish and promote national advocacy priorities.  The ACB national organization exists to guide, support and meet the needs of our individual members, local chapters, and state and special interest affiliates.

The American Foundation for Blind was founded in 1921.  We have spent nearly a century ensuring that individuals who are blind or visually impaired have access to the information, technology, education, and legal resources.  The things we need to live independent and productive lives.

From our earliest days, we have amplified the voices of people with vision loss.  Working as the engine of advancement and opportunity for every person affected by blindness or vision loss. The mission of the American Foundation for the Blind is to create a world of no limits for people with visual disabilities. We mobilize leaders, advance understanding, and champion impactful policies and practices using research and data.

At The National Federation of the Blind, we know that blindness does not define you or your future. Every day we raise the expectations of blind people and battle obstacles between blind people and our dreams. Together with love, hope, and determination, we transform dreams into reality.

The National Federation of the Blind is the only organization that believes in the full capacity of people with visual disabilities.  We have the power, influence, diversity, and determination to help transform our dreams into reality. We believe in blind people because we are blind people.

Our democratically elected leaders come from our diverse nationwide membership of blind people, our families, and our friends. Our belief that we are capable of achieving our dreams and living the lives we want binds us together.  The love and respect we have for one another and for all blind Americans unite us. Our support for one another, recognize acts with courage and determination when we encounter barriers or experience setbacks, and engage in collective action to improve our lives.

https://www.iapb.org

The International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB), established in 1975, leads in international blindness prevention activities. IAPB aspired to link professional bodies, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), educational institutions and interested individuals with national programmes for the prevention of blindness.  Its first major achievement was the establishment of a WHO programme for prevention of blindness, now embodied in the global initiative, VISION 2020: The Right to Sight.

Mission:

To achieve universal access to eye health, by:

  • adding value to and maximising the impact of the individual and collective work of our Members, including those who strive for the inclusion and rehabilitation of those with vision loss,
  • promoting knowledge and awareness of comprehensive eye health system development, particularly at country level.

Values:

In all our endeavours, IAPB Members, staff and supporters will strive to be guided by the following values:

Plurality – we embrace the plurality of approaches we adopt in the pursuit of our common goals, in the belief that our strength derives from diversity rather than uniformity.

Collaboration – we believe that by working together we have far greater chances of achieving change than any one organisation can alone. We actively seek partnerships and collaboration with others as an effective means to achieve our vision.
